CARBON MITIGATION

Scientists all over the world pretty much agree that our increasing carbon gas emissions over the past decades have greatly contributed to the increasing temperature of the earth. Throughout the years, our consumer lifestyles have led to greater fossil fuel dependence, bigger waste generation, and ultimately, larger greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon dioxide is one such greenhouse gas. Along with methane and several others, carbon dioxide traps heat from the sun and prevents it from escaping the Earth, making our planet warm enough for plants and animals to live in. Too much of these greenhouse gases, however, could spell disaster, as slight changes in temperature could have devastating effects on life on Earth.
At present, increasing awareness about global warming has led to several initiatives that could potentially lessen our impact on the Earth’s climate by decreasing or counteracting our carbon dioxide emissions. However, it is also arguably the biggest challenge that we face in managing climate change. At the core of most programs is the reduction of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions by reducing energy use and switching to cleaner energy sources. While many of these methods require government funding, legislation, and regulatory action, businesses can also play a part in the mitigation effort.
To reduce energy consumption, El Nido Resorts have replaced all incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs. Solar panels have been installed at one of the resorts’ beach clubs and at some of the resorts’ newer rooms as an alternative and cleaner energy source. Proper waste management – from segregation to composting and recycling – is strictly implemented, primarily to reduce waste that would otherwise have ended up in landfills, but also to reduce methane gas generation from landfill waste degradation. As much as possible, supplies are purchased locally, not only to reduce carbon emission from transportation, but also to support the livelihoods of the local people of El Nido. El Nido Resorts’ partner airline, Island Trasnvoyager Inc. (ITI), also officially launched its Carbon Offset program in April 2008 – the first airline to do so in the Philippines. Through this program, passengers can donate Php200.00 to purchase 6 native tree seedlings to be planted in Barangay Villa Libertad watershed area in El Nido, Palawan. Not only would the reforestation program offset the carbon emissions generated by ITI flights, it would also help rehabilitate the watershed area of Barangay Villa Libertad.
Still, individual action would always play a big role in El Nido Resorts’ carbon mitigation and environment protection efforts. Simple lifestyle choices – turning off unused appliances, burning less gasoline – could have far-reaching and long-lasting effects when taken all together, which is why all El Nido Resorts staff are required to attend Be G.R.E.E.N. (Guard, Respect, Educate El Nido), a 5-day environmental practices training seminar that tackles proper ecological solid waste management, water conservation, biodiversity conservation, and of course, energy conservation. Through education and information campaigns like this, the message about climate change and global warming reaches a bigger audience, and ultimately, creates bigger impacts and better results.

The Reef Fishes of El Nido book is here!

On June 12, the Reef Fishes of El Nido book was launched. This easy-to-use book highlights the most commonly found reef fishes in the El Nido Protected Area through Gerry Allen’s beautiful photographs. Gerry, the renowned expert in reef fish identification, was introduced to me by his colleague, and co-author, Mark Erdmann. Knowing Mark for several years and working with him as a fellow board of trustee of the El Nido Foundation, it was clear that any project involving Gerry and Mark would not only be relevant to our environmental conservation mission, but also it would be fun . . and it was!
Both Gerry and Mark are scientists willing to share their knowledge for this initiative of Asian Conservation Company (ACC, owner of El Nido Resorts), funded by the Global Environment Facility, and implemented by the El Nido Foundation in partnership with local stakeholders. I am pleased to see this project effectively carry out the ACC model that encourages for-profit companies to work hand-in-hand with nonprofit and government organizations for the benefit and environmental education of the local community. Proceeds from the sales of this publication will form part of the Gerry Allen Scholarship Fund. The fund seeks to advance marine conservation in the El Nido area by assisting deserving youth from the local community in pursuing formal education in the marine sciences.
When the research for this project began in June 2007, only 277 species of reef fish had previously been identified in the El Nido area. Within the first week of surveys, consisting of hours upon hours of research dives, that number was updated, with the final tally reaching more than 800 species. After long days of diving and research, Gerry and Mark would share their discoveries with staff and guests of El Nido Resorts. They also presented their findings and photos in numerous gatherings to local government leaders, fisherfolk, dive operators, resort owners, and tourists. These formal and informal gatherings made science accessible to both locals and visitors. It is hoped that through their efforts, all stakeholders will come to a more acute appreciation of the richness of the biodiversity in the El Nido waters and the importance of protecting this pristine marine environment.
Whether you are a beginner snorkeler or an avid diver, this book is a useful resource to navigate your way through the serene and sometimes surreal underwater world. I invite you to make plans to visit El Nido and discover the beautiful Reef Fishes in this book up close.

Marine Biodiversity

By far the largest habitat on Earth, the oceans are more accurately seen as a great range of environments - from coral reefs to mangrove swamps to seagrass beds. Ocean life teems with greatest abundance and variety in the sunlit surface waters, and the Philippines is a country blessed with very productive marine ecosystems in these sunlit shallow waters. It is one of the six countries in Southeast Asia which forms the "Coral Triangle," the global epicenter of marine biodiversity. In 2005, the country received even greater distinction when it was dubbed as the world's "center of the center of marine biodiversity."
Bacuit Bay in El Nido, Palawan is a haven for a wide variety of marine life. It is home to more than 800 species of fish, 400 species of corals, 5 species of endangered sea turtles, and several species of marine mammals, including the endangered dugong or sea cow. Marine invertebrates - from colorful nudibranchs that grow to only a few centimeters to giant clams that can reach a meter in length - also abound in the pristine waters of the bay.
No wonder divers from all over the world have been flocking to El Nido to experience its rich marine life - Bacuit Bay gives people a glimpse of some of the richest coral reefs in the world. However, one doesn't have to be a diver or a scientist to appreciate how rich it is in terms of marine biodiversity - a visit to the local market already reveals its astounding variety of marine life. But this dependence on coastal resources and the long-held belief that our seas provide an inexhaustible supply of marine resources have taken a terrible toll on marine biodiversity, not just in the Philippines but throughout the world.
Not all hope is lost, however. With increased awareness in biodiversity conservation, local communities and decision-makers are responding to the call. Good environmental governance, with the participation of all stakeholders, is essential to reversing the trend of environmental degradation. Operating within a marine protected area as a tourism industry player has made El Nido Resorts committed to doing its share in preserving Bacuit Bay's rich marine life, so that future generations - local and foreign alike - would be able to enjoy the richness of Bacuit Bay's marine biodiversity.

El Nido Resorts releases Hawksbill hatchlings

In February, El Nido Resorts (ENR) successfully released a total of 130 Hawksbill Turtle hatchlings into Bacuit Bay.
The ENR Environment Team released three hatchlings each on February 19, 21, and 24. All nine hatchlings were from a clutch of eggs discovered by Dinghy Boat Operator Lito Javier at the Small Lagoon Beach in the morning of December 11 last year.
ENR Environmental Manager Mariglo Laririt said that normal incubation period for sea turtle eggs in Baquit Bay is for around 60 days. The longer incubation period for this clutch may be attributed to the lower temperature of the sand over these predominantly cold months.
Meanwhile, the 97 turtle hatchlings which were laid and hatched in Entalula Island were released on February 26. On February 27, a batch of hatchlings that emerged from eggs transferred from El Nido town was also released into Baquit Bay.
ENR tries to minimize incidents of poaching and predation of turtle eggs by transferring them to safer areas.

Latest sightings in El Nido: Dendritic Jawfish and Pinnate Batfish

El Nido’s rich marine life promises new discoveries and sightings each day. The latest additions to El Nido Resorts’ long list of sightings are the Dendritic Jawfish and Juvenile Pinnate Batfish. The Jawfish is usually small and is around the size of a double A battery. This fish likes to live in self made burrows on sandy/rubble areas and peer out of their holes, showing only their big eyes and head. The dendritic Jawfish (Opistognathus dendriticus), which is probably the biggest species of jawfish, can be found right in front of Lagen Island Resort. It is not easy to find the dendritic jawfish out of its burrow. Even harder is to see it incubating the eggs in its mouth. After mating, the male jawfish puts the fertilized eggs in its mouth and keeps them there for about a week until they are ready to hatch. The eggs are first colored pink and when they are ready to hatch, you can see their little bodies already formed and ready to be released by the male parent to fend for themselves. You have a good chance of spotting this behavior during the months of November to January. Another creature, the juvenile pinnate batfish (Platax pinnatus) is also hard to spot. The color patterns and shape change drastically during its growth period. When small, it mimics the movement of the poisonous flatworm. As it grows bigger, its colors and shape slowly change until it becomes an adult. These are very interesting behaviors of fishes you can observe when you are taking your time underwater and looking at the myriad of things. Photo above shows a male Jawfish incubating eggs in its mouth

El Nido Resorts announces Pa-Berdehan winners

El Nido Resorts recently concluded its first ever "Pa-Berdehan: The El Nido Resorts Eco Challenge" with resounding success. The event recognized the most eco-friendly projects of El Nido Resorts staff in simple ceremony last November 7 at Lagen Island Resort.
Two entries tied in the first place: “Tamang Lamig sa Tamang Oras” (Right Temperature at the Right Time), jointly conceptualized by Lagen Island Resort’s Maintenance, Front Office, Housekeeping, and Food and Beverage departments and “Return Empty Oil Containers: Zero Waste, Save More!”, submitted by Miniloc Island Resort’s Purchasing department.
Launched at the beginning of the year, "Pa-Berdehan: The El Nido Resorts Eco Challenge" was established to encourage Resorts employees to apply knowledge acquired during the Be GREEN training seminars. By the end of August, interested employees submitted project proposals that highlighted at least one topic from the five Be GREEN seminars. Projects were implemented in September.
"Tamang Lamig sa Tamang Oras" sought to determine the ideal time at which air conditioning units in the guest rooms and restaurant should be turned on to minimize energy consumption. "Return Empty Oil Containers: Zero Waste, Save More!" sought to reuse containers used for cooking oil, by returning empty containers to be refilled instead of purchasing new containers with every order.
Ten Knots Development Corporation (TKDC) Chair Leigh Perez and Environment Manager Mariglo Laririt presented the award to Engr. Jerduen Dongor of Lagen and Melita Tapalla of Miniloc, who represented their respective groups.
TKDC plans to make "Pa-Berdehan" an annual event.

October was water conservation month for El Nido Resorts’ Be GREEN (Guard, Respect, Educate El Nido) campaign. At the resorts, and also in their homes, participants were enjoined to Reduce consumption, Repair leaking faucets, and Retrofit equipment to use water more efficiently. The staff were also reminded of the important role that El Nido Resorts’ sewage treatment plants play in water conservation, as they convert wastewater into clean water for flushing and irrigation. The resorts' desalination plants, on the other hand, eliminate the need for us to compete with the local communities for freshwater. ISLAND TRANSVOYAGER, INC.
Pioneering the development of carbon emission reduction program in Philippine aviation
By: Arvi Perez

In May 2007, Island Transvoyager, Inc. (ITI) joined the Business Pilot Group (BPG) of the Philippine Business for the Environment (PBE) which seeks to implement the Philippine Greenhouse Gas Accounting and Reporting Program (PhilGARP) to build the capacity of Philippine companies to measure, report and mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. ITI’s objective in joining the BPG for the development of a greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting and reporting system originated from its triple bottom line policy of having financial, social and environmental targets. ITI’s 2007 environmental target is to reduce its carbon footprint. However, before it can reduce its carbon footprint, ITI has to first measure the size of its current carbon footprint. ITI plans to develop a database for its GHG inventory and monitor quantitatively the amount of GHG it generates and to identify cost-effective GHG reduction opportunities. Its voluntary GHG inventory report will be distributed to its stakeholders, government authorities and customers. As background on the BPG, the PBE entered into a partnership with klima (Climate Change Information Center), the World Resources Institute (WRI), the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Energy (DOE) to implement PhilGARP which is a voluntary industry program for the development of a GHG accounting and reporting system meant to achieve national goals for GHG reduction and reduce impacts on climate change. The success of this partnership will depend greatly on the BPG pursuing concerted industry action, and serving as industry models to others. The BPG is comprised of more than 20 companies from various industry sectors who will be guided on how to use the GHG Accounting Tool, prepare a GHG inventory quality management plan and a public GHG inventory report which can be used by the company as a basis for designing and measuring the impact of its GHG emission reduction programs.

Underwater tunnel in El Nido

Dilumacad Tunnel is located west of Dilumacad Island in Bacuit Bay, El Nido. Its opening begins at 12 meters and the depth inside averages at 10 meters. The entrance is quite large: height is about 4 meters, width about 3 meters. The whole length of the tunnel is about 22 meters. The L-shape tunnel opens up into a pretty big space in the middle where one can swim around. Near the end of the tunnel are holes on the roof through which sunlight penetrates, creating an illusion of dancing lights. Inside, you can find lobsters, crabs, shrimps, gobies, nudibranchs, cowry shells, schools of hatchet fish, angel fish, puffer fish, and sometimes, huge stingrays. Dilumacad Tunnel is an overhead environment, meaning there is no direct link to the surface while inside. Diving in Dilumacad is only for advanced divers with experience in this type of environment. Good buoyancy is a must since you would want to avoid stirring up the bottom made up of sand, rubble, silt, and lime stone. Doing so will decrease visibility inside. This site could be dived as long as there is no typhoon and no north swell. North swells cause too much wave action and would make the site dangerous. When exploring this site, divers usually carry two dive lights (one for back up). When the seas are calm, especially during the months of March to November, exploring the Dilumacad Tunnel would be very interesting and exciting since you’ll never know what you will discover inside the tunnel! Photo above shows the view from inside the tunnel.

Meet the “Mimicry Trifecta”

Some small reef fishes mimic something unappetizing or dangerous to keep big fishes away. For an avid reef fish photographer, no other fish can do this better than the “Mimicry Trifecta”. The mimic cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus zonatus) and the juvenile pearlscale monocle bream (Scolopsis margaritifer) imitate the striking color pattern of the black-lined fang blenny (Meiacanthus geminatus). Why the black-lined fang blenny? The black-lined fang blenny feeds by darting out from its abandoned worm tube hiding place, biting off scales, mucus, and pieces of fin from unsuspecting fishes. Large fishes avoid this tiny predator, so the mimic cardinalfish and juvenile pearlscale monocle bream are also spared from predation. In addition, the mimic cardinalfish also mimics the behavior of the black-lined blenny. It makes itself active during daytime, darting about in search of small fish for food. This is an unusual behavior because most cardinalfish hover motionless around coral heads and caves during the day. Be on the lookout for these three fishes when you dive in El Nido. Take a good look though as you might also be confused which one is which! Photo above shows Mimic cardinalfish (Cheilodipterus zonatus)

MUCK and MACRO Diving

Muck diving and Macro diving, the newest trends in scuba diving, are fast becoming popular among diving enthusiasts and professionals.
Macro diving, whose concept resembles that of macro photography, focuses on macro marine life. It aims to look for critters that are too small or to unnoticeable to regular divers. Cryptic creatures like blennies, ornate ghost pipe fishes, nudibranchs, commensal shrimps and crabs, jaw fishes, scorpion fishes, and pygmy seahorses camouflage very well, in holes and crevices, that it is really hard to see them. For most divers, one effective strategy to find these creatures is to know first what kind of habitat they are most likely to be found in.
Muck diving, on the other hand, is diving in spots that lack coral reefs. As more divers become advocates for the aquatic environment and their interest for critters grow, they have come to realize that coral reefs are not the only places to see and discover wonderful animals.
The usual bottom composition in muck diving are salt and silt with the odd rock, debris or weed lying around, usually with a so-so visibility. This is unusual at first because the main reason you got certified in the first place was to dive pristine coral reefs. But why would someone want to dive in a place like that? After I saw all the amazing, mind blowing creatures that live in these so called “ugly” environments, I knew the answer right away!
Recently two world renowned scientists came to El Nido to conduct a fish species count around the area. They documented more than 700 species of fish plus 3 new ones. All three new species were discovered in muck environments. It goes to show that these habitats have the most potential for new discoveries.

The first of Season 7’s thirteen episodes was shown on French channel TF1 last June 29. Adventure Line Productions (ALP TV), producer of the said show, is one of the top TV production companies in France specializing in adventure game shows. Named for the black stripe that stretches from the base of their beaks, around their eyes, and to their napes, this medium-sized (about 30cm long, with a wingspan of 21-23cm) migratory sea bird arrives in El Nido just before the southwest monsoon. They live in the nooks and crannies of the limestone cliffs and feed on small fish and invertebrates. Black-naped terns don't make nests but lay their eggs directly in the cracks of the cliffs. They leave El Nido once their young fly off, which happens around September. For a little bit of info, Black-Naped Terns have been making their presence felt in El Nido since middle of May. Interesting!

El Nido Resorts educates staff on proper garbage disposal

Recognizing the importance of proper garbage management, El Nido Resorts organized an educational tour for its staff to the resorts’ Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Dagal-Dagal, middle of June. Garbage of both resorts are brought to MRF for segregation and proper disposal. Recyclable items such as plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans, and paper are sold to junk shops, while biodegradable items like leftover foods are shredded and composted. The resulting compost is used as potting soil in the resorts’ gardens. The MRF is part of El Nido Resorts' ecological solid waste management program.

El Nido Resorts Celebrates Earth Day

Over 40 resort guests and staff joined El Nido Resorts last April 22 as it celebrated Earth Day via its clean-up and coral monitoring program dubbed as “SCUBAsura”. SCUBAsura participants were divided into two teams – the Lagen Island Resort team and the Miniloc Island Resort team. They were briefed by El Nido Resorts' Dive Instructors Chris Ng and Fernando Morato prior the activities held around Bacuit Bay. The coral monitoring was conducted at Popolcan while other divers tried to look and collect as much garbage as they can in Shimizu. Project Aware Foundation provided CoralWatch kits. The coastal cleaners, on the other hand, went to Ellis Island, Lagen Island's Cove 4, Sandbar, Dilumacad, and 7 Commandos to pick up trash. The total trash haul is as follows: 24 kg plastic, 30 kg of rope, fishing line, and rubber, 21 kg of Styrofoam, 18 kg of glass, and 6 kg of metal. This is markedly lower than the trash recovered in the International Coastal Clean-up in September 2006. Photo above shows the actual underwater clean up of the Miniloc Island Resort SCUBAsura team.

Philippine Cockatoo

The Philippine cockatoo Cacatua haematuropygia is among the rarest and most threatened bird species in the world. It can be found exclusively in the Philippines, where its numbers in the wild are about 1,000 individuals, or even less. Thus, it is listed as Critically Endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN). The Katala Foundation, Inc. (KFI) implements the Philippine Cockatoo Conservation Program with the ultimate aim of saving the Philippine cockatoo from extinction. KFI’s main funding partners are Loro Parque Fundacion based in Tenerife, Spain, and the North England Zoological Society- Chester Zoological Gardens of the UK.
In 2005, KFI rescued 10 Philippine cockatoos from starvation at their project site at Rasa Island, Palawan. The birds were nourished back to health and found potentially fit for translocation to a suitable habitat for soft release into the wild. KFI assessed potential translocation sites all over the Philippines and found Lagen Island Resort as the best and most suitable translocation site for the 10 rescued Philippine cockatoos. Lagen Island has intact coastal forest ecosystems and is widely known in the tourism industry for its strong environmental conservation ethics and practices.
For what is now known as the first ever Philippine Cockatoo Translocation Project, KFI partnered with TKDC, Island Transvoyager, Inc., El Nido Foundation and Southeast Asian Airline. On 24 November, 2006, the ten rescued birds were brought to Lagen Island, and under the guidance of Chester Zoo’s Paul Morris, were taught to re-learn ways to live in the wild. They were released in three batches. Two of them have since died – one of natural causes, another was attacked by a palm civet. Three were never seen again since their maiden flights, two have remained in Cove 2, and the remaining three took to hanging out at the resort and created problems (pecked at guests’ table, disrupted staff work, flew off with small items, etc.) This “pesky-ness” was not clearly anticipated at the beginning of the project, although Paul Morris repeatedly warned of the potential of these already very tame birds to be further attached to humans. Due to cockatoos’ naturally attractive appearance, guests and staff initially fed the birds and played with them. It took all of three days from their first contact with the resort for the birds to assert themselves and turn into a nuisance. The staff then had to aggressively shoo them away with things that they had previously demonstrated aversion to, such as nets.
These three birds are back at an aviary in another cove at Lagen, where they have very little human contact, in the hope of re-training them. They are under the care of two zookeepers from Chester Zoo, and Filipino staff of Katala Foundation. The study of the birds’ behavior and the push for their re-introduction into the wild continues, with the resort staff’s full cooperation to discourage any further activity that may foster human dependence in the birds.

El Nido Package Winner Delivers Hope to Where it is Most Needed

If serving one's fellow countrymen equates a person to being a hero, serving another's countrymen - in a foreign land, freely and wholeheartedly, makes a person truly admirable and inspiring. For over 20 years now, Mavis Orton, a registered midwife in England, has been living here in the Philippines to serve our less fortunate countrymen. An ACTION missionary and an awardee of the “Member of the Order of the British Empire” (MBE) for her numerous charity works, she founded the Shalom Christian Birthing Center which gives maternity care to the less fortunate. Every month, Orton and a group of students and volunteers from local hospitals help 120 women deliver their babies in a makeshift “clinic” inside her house in Antipolo City. Part of the fund she uses in her activities are donated by some philanthropic Philippine and UK based companies while the rest comes from her own pocket. All the years of providing selfless community work to complete strangers and not expecting anything in return is indeed a heroic act. Her reward came upon her when she won a special holiday accommodation from El Nido Resorts during the British Women's Association's (BWA) fundraising fashion show in 2006. As an additional treat, her friends from BWA generously raised funds to pay for her roundtrip ticket to El Nido. Mavis Orton is currently raising funds for the building of a new birthing facility. For those who are interested to support Orton's fundraising, please do not hesitate to contact her at phone number (632) 6611103 or mobile number (+63926) 7400186. Prepare for a "Dive in to Earth Day"

El Nido Resorts will be joining tens of thousands of scuba divers, snorkelers, and ocean lovers from around the world for “Dive in to Earth Day”, an international Earth Day event which has been broadening people's knowledge of Earth Day to include the education and conservation of our planet's aquatic ecosystems. It has given communities an opportunity to voice their concern of the rapid degradation of their local aquatic environment and an opportunity to reverse this trend by organizing hands-on educational conservation events such as underwater cleanups, reef restoration projects and snorkel tours for kids, among others. Dive In To Earth Day activities will be taking place in more than 70 countries during the week of Earth Day, April 22.
El Nido Resorts will be highlighting the event's ocean conservation campaign via the programs Underwater & Coastal Clean up and Coral Reef Monitoring.
Guests of Lagen Island and Miniloc Island Resorts participating in the underwater clean up would have 1 session of dive – free of charge. Also, all participants of the special Earth Day activities will receive a special certificate of participation, to be awarded during the Earth Day Cocktails at the end of the day.
“I am proud to say that I am part of Dive In To Earth not only because it promotes community involvement in protecting our underwater world,” explains Host Committee member Stan Waterman, “but it also bonds these communities closer together in protecting something that affects our everyday lives. The eagerness of Dive In organizers and their thousands of participants gives us great confidence that we are making a difference in the health of our coral reefs and other fragile marine environments.”
The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) launched Dive In To Earth Day in 2000 to remind Earth Day celebrants that the 72 percent of the planet covered by water requires urgent attention. Dive In has become a huge driving force for environmental awareness and now generates 63% of all registered international Earth Day Activities, engaging communities in over 117 countries and territories.

Tres Marias EcoReefs – Revisited

Since the installation of the first artificial reef technology in El Nido, Palawan, the EcoReefs have been showing favorable results as underwater photos showed that they have regenerated more coral growth in a short span of 2 years. More than 500 artificial reefs were installed within the vicinity of Tres Marias near Miniloc Island Resort. El Nido was only the second in the world to have benefited from this commendable system after Bunaken National Park in Indonesia. El Nido Foundation, which heads the program, is eyeing to add more ecoreefs within the year in addition to the 80 modules installed in Tres Marias last March 15. EcoReef is the first and only artificial reef system that has conservation and eco tourism appeal. It is made of white ceramic, a non toxic, ph-neutral, food grade stoneware which is an eco-safe material ideal for settlement of corals and other invertebrates.

El Nido Resorts at ATF 2007 in Singapore

El Nido Resorts’ participation in the recently concluded ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in the sunny Lion City opened its doors once again to new business opportunities. This 8-day forum, held at Suntec City in Singapore, is the largest tourism showcase for the ASEAN’s 10-member nation: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Suntec City witnessed over 1,600 delegates participating in the travelmart (TRAVEX), meetings of industry associations, the ASEAN Tourism conference and media briefings. This year’s ATF successfully created and increased awareness of ASEAN as a highly competitive regional tourist destination in the Asia-Pacific area not just to the international buyers, but also amongst the sellers themselves. According to Lim Neo Chian, Chairman of the Singapore Host Committee, “ATF has been productive and fruitful. There was much enthusiasm and commitment from my ASEAN NTO colleagues and our dialogue partners, in pursuing concrete results and actions. Key outcome of the ASEAN tourism Ministers and NTO meetings include strengthening integration in the region, with focus on increasing connectivity and liberalising travel barriers to facilitate easy cross-border intra-ASEAN travel, as well as making it convenient for visitors to travel into and within ASEAN.” During the event’s closing ceremony held at the hip St. James Power Station in Singapore’s newest entertainment complex, Chian presented Dr Sasithara Pichaichannarong – Thailand’s Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism and Sports, a handover gift that symbolically confirmed Thailand’s hosting of ATF 2008. Snake Island's Secret

One of El Nido’s famous spots, Snake Island, is home to a unique member of the plant kingdom: the pitcher plant. Pitcher plants are carnivorous, and have a penchant for nutrient-deficient soils. Insects are attracted to their leaves shaped like pitchers. These are with a deep cavity, called a pitfall trap, lined with grooves and hairs pointing downward, ostensibly to prevent the insects from escaping. At the bottom of the pitfall trap is a pool of liquid, which is a mixture of water from rain or dew drops, and bacteria, and possibly some enzyme secretions of the plant. The trapped insects drown and eventually find themselves broken down into component minerals and proteins for the plant’s absorption and nutrition, thus making up for the poverty of the soil where they grow! In areas with episodes of prolonged dryness and heat, the leaves wither to prevent further loss of moisture through transpiration. Snake Island’s pitcher plants are of the genus Nepenthes. It is found that after years of island hopping and exploration, Snake Island is the only place in the whole Bacuit Bay where these interesting plants are found!

Kiwi Celebrities Visit El Nido Resorts

Straight from the special screening of the movie “Sione's Wedding” held during the New Zealand Week in Manila, prominent New Zealand screen personalities Oscar Kightly and Teuila Blakely flew to the internationally acclaimed El Nido Resorts in Palawan for a well-deserved break from the hustle and bustle of their careers back home. Kightley and Blakely, who played major roles in the comedy hit, are influential actors, writers and broadcasters in New Zealand. Both actors enjoyed the warm and world-famous Filipino hospitality of El Nido. During their stay, they were also treated to a special dinner which was hosted by Australian General Manager Etienne La'Brooy – who happened to have worked in New Zealand for over 6 years. Among all the activities, they were pleased to the hilt with the private picnic lunch especially prepared for them in one of Lagen Island’s white-sand coves. Aside from getting a golden tan, Blakely and Kightley also enjoyed the soothing spa treatments by Stresscape. These once-in-their-busy-lifetime activities made Blakely exclaim that “this was the best day ever!” She even added that they would be more than happy to promote this haven to their friends as they know that El Nido Resorts is far better than other Asian destinations that are relatively famous to most New Zealanders today. Both of them wanted to extend their short, albeit rejuvenating holiday, but they had commitments back in New Zealand. They promised to return soon with their families and friends on the islands they refer to as “heaven on earth.” Photo above shows Kightley (second from left) and Blakely (third from left) flanked by Senior Resident Manager Mitzi Cañafranca (beside Blakely) and the rest of Lagen Island Resort's staff.

Christmas and New Year at El Nido Resorts

The tiny islands of Lagen and Miniloc were brimming with holiday festivities as resorts guests from different parts of the world celebrated Christmas and New Year here with their family and friends. While some of the guests flocked the award-winning resorts of El Nido last month to experience a different Christmas holiday away from their cold and frosty homes in countries like Europe and Canada, the others simply wanted to spend private quality time with their loved ones. Aside from the cultural show and lavish buffet spread along Lagen’s poolside & Miniloc’s white sand beach, the Christmas party had a traditional gift giving for the kids led by no other than El Nido Resorts’ very own Santa Claus. It was indeed a real treat for the kids to see dear ol’ Santa in person during their Christmas holiday! On the last day of the year, most of the guests flocked to the Pangulasian Beach Club to witness the year’s “final sunset” while enjoying their cocktails. After sunset, the guests were ferried to their respective resorts for another celebration where they were treated to a sumptuous buffet, expertly prepared by the resorts’ internationally-trained chefs. Guests were in festive mood as they gathered at the bar after dinner for a night of Chill and House music. At the strike of midnight, guests witnessed a spectacular fireworks display that illuminated the calm skies of El Nido.

COTS’ Cousins

Crown-of-Thorns’ Starfish (COTS) get a lot of bad rap, and not undeservedly so. They devour coral polyps, have more than their share of arms, and are with prickly venomous spines! But did you know that the COTS’ cousins are not as benign as they look either? Starfish, or more accurately, sea stars, are members of the Class Asteroidea (meaning “star-shape”). They exhibit radial symmetry, and they usually have five arms, with rows of tube feet on the underside. They come in red, blue, ochre, orange, yellow, green, and lavender. They also have the ability to push their stomachs out of their mouths in order to digest prey too big to swallow. Their bottom-dwelling habit and voracious appetites mean that they, like their distant relatives - brittle star and sea urchins - help clean up after messy eaters whose chomping habits leave off food bits that would otherwise decay. An underwater janitorial service, if you please. So if you’re one of those who have always thought of sea stars as boring creatures, think again. For what could be more exciting than having many feet? A stomach that can be stuck out of the mouth.

Tree Planting

Congressman Miguel Zubiri, President of Katala Foundation, Inc., his wife Audrey, former Department of Energy Secretary Vince Perez and Ten Knots Chair Leigh T. Perez planted seedlings of Sterculia sp., locally known as Balindadagat, at Cove 2, Lagen Island, two days after the launching of the Philippine Cockatoo Translocation Project. This tree planting was specifically chosen because its fruit is heavily preferred by critically endangered Philippine Cockatoo. Photo above shows (from left to right) Audrey Zubiri, Cong. Philippine Cockatoo Translocation Project

Meek and lovely, and therefore a natural target of the international pet trade, the Red-vented Philippine Cockatoo Cacatua haematuropygia is among the rarest and most threatened bird species in the world. It exclusively can be found in the Philippines, where its numbers in the wild are about 1,000 individuals, or even less. KFI’s main funding partners are the Loro Parque Fundacion based in Tenerife, Spain, and the North England Zoological Society - Chester Zoological Gardens of the UK. In 2005, KFI rescued 10 Philippine Cockatoos from starvation at their project site at Rasa Island, Palawan. The birds were nourished back to health and found potentially fit for translocation to a suitable habitat for soft release into the wild. KFI assessed potential translocation sites all over the Philippines and found Lagen Island Resort in El Nido, Palawan, owned and managed by Ten Knots Development Corporation (TKDC), as the best and suitable translocation site for the 10 rescued Philippine Cockatoos. Lagen Island Resort has intact coastal forest ecosystems and is widely known in the tourism industry for its strong environmental conservation ethics and practices. For what is now known as the first ever Philippine Cockatoo Translocation Project, KFI partnered with TKDC, Island Transvoyager, Inc., El Nido Foundation and Southeast Asian Airline. On 24 November, 2006, the ten rescued birds were brought to Lagen Island. For the next three months, under the guidance of Chester Zoo’s Paul Morris and the support of Lagen Island Resort staff, the birds will re-learn ways to live in the wild. When they are deemed ready, the Cockatoos will be released. It is fervently hoped that they meet reproductive success in their natural habitat.

Cuttlefish in El Nido

Spot one if you can!(br>
Among the numerous creatures that dwell in the waters of El Nido are the cuttlefish. Known for their ability to change color in an instant, cuttlefish belong to the group of the more sought after creatures in El Nido. Living around a colorful patch of life underwater, the often called “sea chameleons” could put on stripes, spots, even solid metallic blues, greens, golds, and silvers. This interesting ability is most useful when they communicate with other cuttlefish, camouflage from predators, catch prey, and even attract potential mates. When mating, cuttlefish’s tentacles are locked with each other. It is believed, though, that after mating and laying of eggs, cuttlefish die. Cuttlebone, that internal rigid white structure that gets washed ashore is all that is left of this interesting creature. Meanwhile, it is not so easy to spot one in El Nido. Although they can move gracefully with their side fins, they can be as still as a sponge that divers might not notice them especially when they decide to attach themselves to reefs. Unlike our other sea creatures, there’s no telling where or when one can encounter a cuttlefish in El Nido, but when you do, be still, keep an eye, and count the patterns it could change to!

Bulthaupt in...” goes to El Nido

Renowned German TV personality and presenter Axel Bulthaupt, who presents travel destinations in his popular TV show "Bulthaupt in...," recently visited El Nido. Bulthaupt was joined by his production team, headed by Executive Volker Adam, to feature Lagen Island Resort where they experienced the world-famous Filipino hospitality. The team explored the Lagen trail, Big lagoon, and Cudugnon Cave among others. The group also enjoyed the scenic view of the sunrise from Pinagbuyutan Island, located just North of Lagen Island. After long days of work, the resort’s German-speaking Executive Chef Ramon Antonio surprised the team with a dramatic Apfelstrudel (apple strudel) served with vanilla sauce after their buffet poolside dinner on the last night. The evening was made even more memorable by the cultural show highlighted by the Philippine National Dance - Tinikling. Like the tikling birds avoiding parallel bamboo traps set by farmers, Bulthaupt hopped over the clashing bamboo poles with no less than Ten Knots’ Marketing & PR Manager Apple Lina as his partner. The awe-striken Bulthaupt could not believe how amazing El Nido is as a destination. He was confident that his show will bring droves of visitors to El Nido after "Bulthaupt in El Nido" airs soon in Germany.

El Nido Resorts Reap International Recognition

El Nido Resorts’ commitment to environmental conservation did not go unnoticed by the 12th annual Conde Nast Traveler Green List judging committee. El Nido Resorts is one of the twelve honorees this year and the only Philippine property to have made it to the prestigious Green List. More than 80 applicants coming from different segments of the tourism industry across the continent vied for this much coveted recognition given by Conde Nast Traveler, the world’s most highly-regarded independent travel publication. The honorees, consisting of resorts, tour operators and destinations, were chosen based on their environmental preservation efforts, involvement with local communities and the quality of guest experience. Lagen Island Resort and its sister property, Miniloc Island Resort, are owned and operated by Ten Knots Development Corporation who believe in respecting the area’s natural resources through responsible tourism. Both El Nido Resorts are managed based on the principles of sustainable development, where tourism, the local community, and conservation of the natural environment are in harmony with each other. A substantial amount of time and money have consistently been invested into environmental protection and conservation programs and projects. These were undertaken not only at the resorts but in the local community as well. An on-going conservation project is the rehabilitation of coral reefs through the installation of eco-reefs made of state-of-the-art ceramic modules, the first of its kind in the Philippines and only the second in the world. Other significant projects spearheaded by El Nido Resorts are regular coastal clean-ups, marine turtle conservation program, transplantation of giant clams, monitoring of illegal marine activities and a lot more. Guests of El Nido Resorts have not only recognized these worthwhile efforts, but also voted for Lagen and Miniloc Island Resorts in Smart Travel Asia’s travel poll as top Leisure Resorts in Asia. Lagen Island Resort is the only Philippine property that made it to the top 20 list. Smart Travel Asia is an online travel magazine, the authority on travel to and within Asia, read by over 90,000 affluent frequent travelers worldwide each month. Lagen Island Resort was also recently named by National Geographic Adventure Magazine as a world-class resort. This honor was bestowed in recognition of Lagen Island Resort’s concern for the environment, its location in a unique destination with towering limestone cliffs and unspoiled coral reefs, and the wide range of activities offered to guests.

EcoReef Installation

You are invited to take part in the upcoming EcoReef Installation in El Nido, Palawan. Spearheaded by the El Nido Foundation through the multi-stakeholder Task Force Tres Marias, more than 200 state-of-the-art ceramic reef modules will be installed in Tres Marias Island this month to help coral and marine life re-colonize the reefs that have been badly damaged by dynamite and other forms of illegal fishing. Over 250 artificial reef modules were already installed since its inception last April of this year and most of them are already showing favorable results in terms of coral regeneration. There is nothing like getting involved in this worthy project to bring a reef back to life. Special rates and concessions are extended to divers and non-divers who will share their valuable time in helping us make this restoration project possible.

Turtle Release at Guintungauan Island

After the beach cleanup, two hawksbill turtles were released at Guintungauan Island, otherwise known as the Turtle Island. Guests were encouraged to join El Nido Resorts’ Environment Team, lead Environment Manager Mariglo Laririt, in the release of these 2 prisoners that were caught / trapped in a fish cage to highlight Marine Turtle Conservation and aquatic clean-up issues. El Nido Resorts, in partnership with local stakeholders, actively campaigns for the release of captured turtles. ENR is also a partner of the Protected Area Office in turtle tagging, where, before their release, turtles are tagged with a small metal band bearing a unique number recognized internationally, to monitor the turtles’ path and age. The turtles released were tagged with bands PH19664 and PH19665. Hey kids! International Cleanup Day on the Year of the Turtle

Dumping one’s garbage into the ocean not only pollutes the seas but also kills marine life. Many animals that live in the sea often mistake plastic and other garbage as food and die if they eat it. Sea turtles, which are mostly endangered, are often victims of plastics because they mistake it for jellyfish. Every piece of litter has a person’s face behind it. Someone somewhere either deliberately or thoughtlessly disposed of garbage into the sea, remaining there for a very long time or washing up ashore. This year being the International Year of the Turtle, El Nido Resorts put up two special events together- International Coastal Clean up and the Tagging and Release of Captured Turtles. This special event was participated in by the resorts staff and in-house Guests. To start the event, Mariglo Laririt briefed the participants about what to pick and what to leave. Sometimes, deeply embedded garbage can destroy corals when extracted. Mariglo provided the participants with information on items commonly found in the ocean and how long it takes for them to decompose. That day, enthused guests accepted garbage bags from the resorts so they, too, can help clean up. Clean-up participants were either “Scubasura” (derived from scuba and basura, local term for garbage) divers or beach cleaners. Lagen’s Scubasura team, headed by In-house Dive Instructor Chris Ng together with beach clean up team, led by Marine Sports Guide Raffy Dalabajan, gathered a total of 362.6kgs of trash from both land and underwater. The garbage they collected from Coves 2, 3 & 4 are made up of: rubber with 16.2kgs; plastic beverage bottles/containers with 227.2kgs (Whew! Quite a lot so be careful when you drink your bottled water!!!); glass beverage bottles 32.2kgs; beverage cans or soda cans 9 kgs; and building materials such as tiles and steel 78kgs. For Miniloc's team, Dive Instructors Fern Morato & Dong Adriano's Scubasura team and Marine Sports Guides Dante Villanueva and Abet Alagao's beach cleanup team from the same resort hauled a total of 461.4kgs. The garbage both teams collected in Danggan, Dilumacad, Guintungauan, & Natnat islands consisted of the following: 246.40kgs of paper/plastic; 44.4kgs of beverage bottles; 13.6kgs of beverage cans; 89.4kgs of rubber; 60.8kgs of styrofoam and 6.8kgs of fiberglass. After all the hard work in picking up all those garbage under the heat of the sun, the resorts guests and staff were treated to a scrumptious barbeque lunch at Pangulasian Beach Club. After partaking the buffet, another Scubasura team led by Fern was made in front of the island together with resorts staff and 3 Japanese guests. Fern's team collected a total of 116.5kgs of “basura” consisting of the following: paper/plastic:9kgs; beverage bottles: 9kgs; beverage cans: 7kgs; clothing/shoes 2kgs; food wrapper/container: 11kgs; light bulb/tubes: 3.5kgs; and 12kgs of rope. Everybody had fun - cleaning, segregating, sharing, and being educated on how they can do their share in protecting and conserving mother Earth. See you all again in the next cleanup and don't be a litter bug!!!

Daddy Dartabout

Dive or snorkel anywhere in the tropics and you are likely to be acquainted with sergeant majors, slightly ovoid, laterally compressed fish that as adults, are between 11 to 22 cm long. Distinguishing marks are vertical black stripes, around five or six, against pale blue or gray background. They hover around in midwater. If you have snorkeled in front of Miniloc Island Resort, you are 100% sure to have met them! The sergeant majors of El Nido, and in most of the waters around the Pacific, actually, are of the species sexfasciatus, which means “six-banded.” They are a great fish to observe during your stay because they are everywhere. They prefer relatively shallow water and come in groups, so that you don’t need to dive to see them. At Miniloc, they hang around for the freebies and the morsels left behind by the giant jacks. Because of a now-very-famous full-length cartoon movie about a father clownfish going to great lengths to find his son, everyone’s familiar with underwater dad-moms. If you observe nesting sergeant dads inconspicuously, you will be amused at how brave they are. They attack any object that appears to threaten the nest – pieces of coral, shells, a diver’s hand. When you see them frantically wave their tails at you, they are likely to be “blowing” you away. If you are a diver, and you go too near a nesting male, you might scare him away and leave his eggs vulnerable. So think of the daddy clownfish in the movie and dive carefully. Baby sergeants are so tiny when they hatch that unless they all move at the same time, you will hardly notice them. They drift with the current and feed on plankton. And this is where similarity with the movie ends – the babies are totally on their own.

Jack Nicklaus International Invitational Tournament

El Nido Resorts and Island Transvoyager Inc., the charter airline that provides the fastest direct and daily flights to El Nido, were two of the major sponsors in the recently concluded Jack Nicklaus International Invitational Tournament held at the sprawling Sta. Gary Sales of Staffmasters Inc. and Felix Dennis Cortez of Villamor Golf Club emerged as winners in this tournament and will represent the Philippines at the International Finals set to happen at the Bear's Club in Jupiter, Florida USA this October. Winning was not easy for Sales and Cortez, however, as they had a nail-biting sudden-death playoff for tying a 60 net score with two other teams: Wilfred Batara and Manfred Guangko, and Alex Ignacio and Raul Gonzales. The Palawan Hornbill

Imagine floating on your back in Lagen Island Resort’s pool. Between you and the vast blue sky are large branches of old giant trees, silent ancient sentinels of the limestone forest around you. Then suddenly, noisy chatter and the flapping of black and white against the blue sky and the green leaves – the Palawan Hornbill. How many? Five? Seven in a group? You wonder about this bird, and you realize that you’ve never seen it elsewhere, because it is endemic to Palawan. And whereas in other areas the Hornbills are very wild and difficult to see, here they are tame and rather a common sight. This gives you an assurance that they feel secure around the resort. You see the many species of figs around you – the hornbills are well-fed. Big nesting trees abound – they can breed properly. You smile and close your eyes. All is well.

The British Women’s Association’s (BWA)

The British Women’s Association’s (BWA) Annual Ball was held in celebration of the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration last June 3 at the Grand Ballroom of the Renaissance Hotel in Makati City. The event, aptly titled “Candlelight Ball,” was attended by over 200 guests donning top hats and tiaras. The ballroom was magnificently decorated with golden carriage, candelabras, royal flags and a couple of beefeater guards were even posted near the ballroom entrance to complete the theme. As always, this event is very important to enable the BWA to continue supporting the numerous communities they are looking after. Thus, a raffle was held to help increase ticket sales for that evening. The grand prize, won by Charity Committee Leader Maureen Robinson, is an all-expense paid holiday at the luxurious Lagen Island Resort in El Nido, Palawan. According to Linda Boyd, BWA President, “Maureen [Robinson] has been very active on our community assistance team for the past three years so that [her winning] was fitting.” Shown in photo are (L-R) Linda Boyd, Maureen Robinson and Apple Lina - Marketing & PR Manager of El Nido Resorts.

PGMA in El Nido Resorts

After the CLC inauguration, the President and her daughter took some time-off and visited El Nido Resorts’ Lagen Island and stayed in one of our luxurious forest suites which has a magnificent view of Bacuit Bay. During her stay, the President and her daughter enjoyed a variety of exciting activities like kayaking in the scenic big and small lagoons, island hopping, and scuba-diving where the President had the chance to swim with Miniloc Island’s resident jack fishes. The President enjoyed the dive in El Nido’s clear waters so much that she requested to do another one to fully experience its rich marine life. Schools of yellow snapper, fusilier, catfish, clownfish, barracuda and a lot more welcomed the adventurous President this time.
The highlight of the trip was an exclusive sand bar dinner where a sumptuous spread which include freshly grilled lamb chops, roast beef and salmon prepared by Chef Tom Hines was served Russian Style. Piña in Paradise
by Bea Zobel Jr.

MENTION El Nido and one imagines beautiful beaches, blue skies and waters, fascinating cliffs and islands. El Nido is the site for one's dream vacation. No wonder, then, that my house guests, the people from Vogue Magazine (Spain), wanted to visit the resort.
Arriving in El Nido, the Vogue team (Javier, Juan, Alberto and Yolanda) did all the expected things involving sand, sea and surf. Then our gracious host, Leigh Perez, asked if the Spanish journalists were interested in seeing the piña project of the El Nido Foundation.
The response was an enthusiastic yes. It seems the fame of our delicate fabrics has truly reached distant shores. In fact, Yolanda had earlier tried to set up a meeting with the writer of the book on piña, Lourdes Montinola. She was overjoyed at the chance to become better acquainted with the cloth.
Yes, the El Nido management does not just run a resort. It is also involved in several socioeconomic development projects through a foundation first established by Carlos Soriano decades ago.
A three-pronged approach to these projects was identified:
Sustainable environmental resource management to address environmental degradation
Socioeconomic development to address the problem of dependence on a single industry or employer
Local capacity building to address the impact of tourism on the local community
WEAVING PROJECT
Some years back, a number of fishermen had come to the foundation to ask for help. They needed to augment their incomes from fishing. Unfortunately, with increased population and depleted marine resources, they were finding it hard to feed their families.
Realizing that the area had an abundance of wild pineapple plants, the foundation decided to introduce a weaving project.
This was actually quite a revelation for me, because I didn't know piña fabric came from a special variety of pineapple that grew in the wild! Imagine all the wealth that's just out there waiting to be utilized! I suppose I had a vague idea that piña material came out of cans like fruit salad. (Just kidding!)
The fishermen were helped by another local nongovernment organization, the Rurungan Foundation. They taught the people to weave. They also suggested what items to produce.
A friend of mine suggested that perhaps the fishermen, though they had not woven before, did not find the new craft too difficult to master because they were used to mending their nets.
El Nido Foundation's executive director, Irma Marcelo, took us to a small home where a loom had been set up. We were first shown by a woman named Lita Bernardo how the fiber was extracted from the pineapple leaves. Okay, now you all know it doesn't come from the fruit, so I am not about to raid your salad bars to weave my next terno!
Lita used a broken plate to scrape the leaves. Eventually extremely fine strands of fiber were produced.
The fibers were washed and treated. Then they were knotted together to form thread. The thread was then ready for the looms. Interestingly, in the home we visited, the weaver was a man.
Our Spanish guests were really impressed. They were fascinated by the delicacy of the fibers, so fine that it seemed even a gentle breeze would tear them apart. It looked like one was weaving with butterfly wings or feathers.
Someone else commented it was amazing how anyone could have imagined that the sturdy piña leaves could be woven into something so soft. How did the early Filipinos ever manage to discover the process?
LIKE PLUCKING A HARP
The weaving itself caused exclamations of admiration and delight. The process was compared to plucking a harp.
It was a treat for me to see some of the footage of the process taken by the Spaniards. The eye of the cameraman really brought out the lyric quality of the whole process. The effect of the light on the threads made one feel sunshine was being gathered to form this elegant and unique fabric.
On the plane ride back, our Spanish guests could speak of nothing else but the weaving of the piña. Somehow I, who can't stitch together anything to save my life or yours, couldn't help but feel proud. For uniqueness is, indeed, one important quality of the cloth. In this whole wide world, only Filipinos weave piña.
There are other attractive qualities to it as well. Piña is so light, et it is also very strong. Montinola's wonderful book on the fabric notes several tests undertaken which show just how sturdy the threads are. Many local designers have started experimenting with our homegrown cloth. A recent piña gown by Randy Ortiz, which appeared in Mons Tantoco's book "Baro," was done in vibrant colors and featured a train with unstitched fringes. The wearer, Jeannie Ng, looked elegant and yet not overly formal.
What I found really touching is how the fabric is actually helping enhance the incomes of a community of fishermen. I think this once more proves the point that our crafts and the knowledge that our ancestors have lovingly passed down to us can really restore our dignity as a people as well as improve our lives.

A View From the Top
by Joey Cuerdo, Power Up

1. How and where climbing started in the Philippines
Climbing started in the limestone cliffs of Wawa, Montalban in the early 80's. A group of mountaineers moved a step further from the conventional trekking and hiking trails, to the steep and highly technical vertical routes. Names to connect to early beginnings: Gus Guerrero, Vincent Christian
The growth of the sport took a huge leap in the early 90's when the interest in rock climbing moved from not just climbing the rocks, but establishing and developing the climbable areas, still in Montalban. Names to connect to modern rock climbing: Bubut Tan Torres, Norman Jaravata
2. Lagen's climbing facilities
El Nido is blessed with limestone cliffs, towering 300-400 feet above the sea. Once considered not climbable, due to various foreign expedition results that stated "...there is no climbing in Bacuit Bay," the rock wall of Lagen proved the statements wrong. Once perceived to be too sharp for climbing, Lagen Islands' walls facing west are well weathered, immense and plentiful. Routes vary from easy to difficult.
A certain section of the island called Cove 2, holds the potential of being a major climbing haven in the Philippines. Separated from the resort by a 45 minute trek or a 20 minute kayak, the outdoor enthusiast can experience the whole picture of adventure in the wilderness.
There exist close to 20 bolted climbing routes. The climbing lines were chosen to provide the rock climbing experience to even the most novice climbers, yet provide a sure challenge for the experienced climbers.
3. Equipment
All safety equipment are CE certified, passing all international safety standards.
All anchors are stainless steel (for minimal saltwater corrosion), glued into the rock (for minimum damage to the rock's cracks and crevices).
Clip-in anchors locations were carefully chosen to prevent unwanted swings and poor clipping body positions.
4. Training and preparation before a climb
Prior to hitting the big walls of Cove 2, a short intro to climbing will be done by the climbing guides at the resort. Tips on footwork, balance and conserving upper body strength while on the rock will be given, these techniques being the foundation of movement on the rock. SOP signals will be discussed along with a general run through of the entire climbing process, from the wearing of the gear to the rappel down from the top of the rock.
5. Challenges of climbing
Climbing poses more than physical challenges. With the wide variety of routes available, a smart selection of routes makes the challenge of rock climbing more of the mind and spirit than of the body.
To go higher than what you have said "This is high enough," ... that would be the challenge.
Then there are those who have been there and done that. Climbing for the experienced climbers is the perfection of the route. They will aim to "flash" the route, climbing the route on-sight, first attempt with no "beta" or info about the route. Discovery and the ability to physically respond to the demands of the route, then and there, are all rolled into the on-sight. Failure of onsight though is an option, and many will opt to "red point" the route after a few more attempts.
6. The beauty of it all
Climbing in Lagen Island's Cove 2 is not just about rock climbing. It's a sum of the high exposure in the vertical world, the beauty of the ocean, flora and fauna that surrounds you, the confidence you find in yourself, and the realization that God had laid this all out for you to experience.

Guests Help Clean the Environment with the Eco-Nido Bag

Every year, we recover from all over the different islands of El Nido more than 1,000 kilograms of non-biodegradable waste, including plastic wrappers, soda cans, film caps, and even cans of hairspray. Such garbage cannot be properly disposed in the El Nido Protected Area. With the use of the Eco-nido bag provided by El Nido Resorts, guests now join us in our efforts to keep El Nido clean. The eco-nido bag is used for non-biodegradable waste and other garbage.
Another bag made from recyclable polyethylene is likewise provided by El Nido Resorts to be used during guests' activities. Guests are enjoined to pick-up non-biodegradable waste seen littering the beaches and other surroundings during their activities and putting these inside the bag. Settle - Smith Wedding

My husband and I have just returned from the wedding experience of a lifetime. El Nido’s Miniloc resort was recommended as the kind of special place which could host such an event. All of our expectations were met and far exceeded. El Nido is one of the most beautiful places in the world; El Nido’s resorts are beautifully situated and staffed with friendly, helpful workers keen to ensure a wonderful holiday. On our big day, the mayor of El Nido was brought over from the mainland to officiate. The staff set up a flower-lined altar for the ceremony just off the beach facing the sea. Immediately afterward, we were whisked away to our own private island for sunset and a barbecue dinner. I can honestly say I never expected to wear a life vest with my wedding dress. What fun it all was. Again and again, we remarked how amazing our day was, how hospitable the staff were, how grateful we are to the El Nido staff for making our dream come true. We extend a special thanks to the General Manager, Mr. Fujimoto, for his extra efforts to make sure we were happy. Thank you!

The President reiterated that tourism is a priority program of her administration. She then went on to discuss other matters of national concern.
