The name TEN KNOTS is based on the definition of knot as a unit of speed of one
nautical mile per hour. The founders of Ten Knots were divers who explored dive
sites in the Philippines on board their diveboat, the M/V Via Mare. They believed
that ten knots is the ideal speed not only in getting to their dive destination
quickly, but also cruising leisurely enough to appreciate and enjoy Nature’s
endowments. Thus, the name Ten Knots reflects the company’s ideals to strive for a
balance between meeting human needs and caring for nature.
Since its inception, Ten Knots has advocated responsible tourism and has exercised
stewardship over its natural environment. The El Nido area of Northern Palawan is a
showcase of geological and biological diversity. In recognition of the importance of
its biodiversity, the Philippine government elevated the status of El Nido first to a
turtle sanctuary, then to a marine reserve and finally in 1998, to that of a managed
protected area. For over two decades, Ten Knots has strived to maintain a delicate
balance between achieving tourism development goals, conserving El Nido’s fragile
environment, and meeting the needs of the local community.
The component companies in the Ten Knots group are currently owned by the ACC Resorts,
Inc. and Nissin Sugar Manufacturing Company, Ltd. (Nissin).
They include Ten Knots Development Corporation (TKDC) which develops and operates El Nido
Resorts at Miniloc Island Resort (MIR) and at Lagen Island Resort (LIR) and Ten Knots
Philippines, Inc. (TKP) which focuses on property management.
Ten Knots has always developed its business based on the philosophy of
responsible and sustainable tourism development. To establish a long-term
partnership with the local community, most of the resort staff is hired
from nearby areas. Employees are educated on the job about their natural
environment. TKDC is the biggest private sector employer in El Nido. The resorts
operate according to environmentally sound principles and comply with all
government standards of operation. TKDC makes a large contribution to municipal
services through its payment of business and property taxes at El Nido and other
corporate taxes to the province.
